Vision Sharing at Work

What about those of us who are already in leadership positions, but find that our team isn’t as engaged as we like?

Well, a transformational leader arrives at their vision along with their team. This means your team is fully on board. They’re invested in what you’re doing and they feel ownership over your success and the success of the company.

When you’re seeking new employees or trying to form teams for a project, do your due diligence and research your members before you bring them on board. Screen and fully assess everyone on the front end. Do they present themselves honestly? Are they engaged and do they deal with conflict in a productive and proactive manner? This saves you from having to face turnover or deal with a team full of people who don’t share your vision and aren’t aligned with the best interests of the company.

Try temporary or consultant employees that you can bring on and vet for a while before committing them to a permanent position. Offer assessments and clear direction and dialogue along the way. This helps you bring out the best in your people and gives you a way to move on if it’s not working out.

Once the employee is on your team, work with them. Find out their career goals and how they envision “success” at their job and then work with them to help them obtain those goals. While not every person’s vision or outcome can be the final product, everyone can and should have a say in what they see as a successful outcome of their job or project.

So often as bosses we get in this mindset of “I have to tell everyone what to do.” Essentially, we get bossy. If your team is engaged and you’re working together on outcomes; if you’re polite and respectful of your employees, you’ll find people support you and get behind you. They’ll want to perform to the best of their abilities because your success is their success. That is transformational leadership: listening, engaged and active leadership, helping everyone work together toward something they’re proud of. Transformational leaders walk the talk and do what they say they’re going to do. They’re authentic, consistent and always working towards a positive vision for every member of the company from the intern to the VP.

Share your vision with your employees, employers and coworkers. No matter what position you’re in, treat others how you want to be treated, participate and engage. Take ownership of your role in the company and act like a leader—wherever you are.
